RTP and house edge in plain numbers
RTP is a theoretical long-run return for one specified game configuration. A 96% RTP is the same model as a 4% house edge: over a very large hypothetical amount staked, 96 units are returned for every 100 staked. It is not a fee taken from each bet and it does not say what happens in a short session.

For illustration, 4% of 10,000 units is 400 units. That is aggregate arithmetic, not a forecast for 10 or 100 personal units.
Why two 96% games can feel different
Volatility describes the spread and timing of possible results, not their long-run percentage. A higher-volatility game can place more of its theoretical return in less frequent larger events; a lower-volatility game can show smaller events more often. Hit frequency is another separate label: it concerns how often a game records a win under its own definition, not the size of that win.
Imagine two games with the same stated RTP. One can have ten empty rounds before a win, while another records several small wins; neither pattern proves that the next round is due to change. Each round is independent and a prior loss does not create a better next chance.
What to compare on the game screen
Open the information panel and note the exact RTP, paytable, bet range and feature rules for the build actually being shown. A title can exist in more than one configuration, so a number from a search snippet or an old review is weaker than the current in-game panel. Compare like with like: same title version, same currency display and the same published rule set.
RTP is useful vocabulary for a product page. It is not a session plan, a safety rating or a reason to keep playing after a limit has been reached.
